How has my skills developed from my prelim to my thriller



Camera work

When did the prelim I had no real knowledge of camera work of edit or mise~en~scene or what sound meant in filming so I was all very new to this. When doing the prelims I didn't really all these aspects in to account as didn't understand them properly. However I knew from I previous lessons about long shots , mid shot and close up so did Those shots but we didn't really take much els in to account apart from the focus and the white balance and just the simplistic stuff. After having all this time to improve and learn new things before making me thriller really help improve my skills in media. Such as camera work instead of using the 3 most basic shot in our prelim , in our thriller we experiment with a lot different shots and angles for example we used tracking shots , over the shoulder shoot , hand held. I think we really experimented with our rage a shoots a lot more with our thriller which really gave us so much more to work with when it came down to edit.

Editing

Editing for our thriller was a lot more complicated then just cutting and pasting shots together like in our prelim. A lot of our editing was after effects which again had never done  before but after having learnt over time in the editing sweet. As our thriller was a much faster moving pass so there were a lot more cuts and also with our thriller there was a lot to be concerned about on a continuity level. in our prelim we only had to worry about the gun and what side of the room the actors where standing with our thriller you had to worry about screens going dim what part of the blue print he was looking at. Lots of little had to be taken in to account or the thriller would not have been believable to the viewer. All in all the editing proses for our thriller was a lot more complex then our prelim , as our prelim was not as long as our thriller so didn't really require as much editing , however I am pleased with the contrast of the editing in my thriller and my prelim as I feel the editing in my prelim was week and minimal and i could do it over I would have done much more. However being able to see the difference between the two I am able to say that my editing has improved vastly over the last for months.

Mise-en-scene

 when creating out prelim as they where just a lesson time task we didn't really have much time to plan so didn't have time to take in to account meis-en-scene as that was not really the focus of the task it was really more to work with camera and editing. However in our thrillers it was key. To make it believable to the audience. We knew we wanted him pyjamas to suggest it was night time but how ever due to him being. Autistic we knew they couldn't been an average teenage boy pyjamas and we wanted them to also link to the story so we found some child's 2 piece pyjamas in and adult size covered in aeroplanes. The was to link to his love of planes and 911 theme. In our thriller meis-en-scene was a key aspect even for the smallest thing where as in our prelim it was of minimal concern.


Sound
When looking at sound in our thriller and our prelim , there was more verbal communication in our prelim then our thriller. however there is non digetic music, where as in our prelim there was no non digetic sound at all. using non digetic sound is much easier then using digetic sound as when you filming with digetic you need to be really awere of sounds out when roling as well as how the speach is hurt and recorded. with non digetic sound it is useually put in after while editing saving the concern of sound when filming and is more accurate it to get exsactly what you want , so less can go wrong. also i think due to the fact its a thriller to have just non diegetic sounds it really adds and helps to build the tention, with out giving any thing away speach.

This is Jake, he is 18 and finishing his A levels in Pyschology, I.T and Law. He wants to study Political Science at University of Sussex when he finishes and then go into developmental aid work in Africa as part of his year abroad. He enjoys reading The Times, Huffington Post and Guradian online to abreast of current affairs and goes to the cinema once a month mainly because he feels guilty about illegally downloading but also for the visceral pleasure and the odd date. The last film was Zero dark thirty and really enjoyed it especially its objective veiew of torture scenes in Iraq. His musical tastes vary from old school rock Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC to more contemporary music like  XXYYXX and Imagine Dragons. His favourite all time film is The Dark Knight and despite not agreeing with their policies on giving information to the government he does go on Facebook and occassionally rants in 140 characters on twitter.





Our Perfect Audience member


considering our film is an Action thriller and is most likley to contain high action chases which useually is more apealing to a male audience ,however possilbely a percentage of women as well.
Being a very technical film i thinnk looking more in to depth then just sex i think it will apeal to action seeking thriller loves , however may also appeal to groups of people with an interest in computers and haccking. This movie may also apeal to them.  We are looking a very large range of audience so the film could potentially do well due to the audience. Our film could also appeal to people with an interets in current affairs who would have read about Gary Mackinnon and remembered him from the news and when our film came out have an interest in watching our film.

If our film was advertised in broadsheets as well we may well broaden our target audience to over 25's who may well like our film because of its current affairs interest. As our film is similar to Mercury rising and The Sixth Sense in that it stars a young boy we may also widen our target audience by appealing to 15 year olds for whom the film could resonate. Our main target audience would be targeted by social networking and this would help attract them as we market the film where they look at things and hopefully this would attract girls as well as boys. Boys who like our film may well watch it with their girlfriends and older people who would watch it with their wives/partners.

Mental disabilities affects at the most every 3 per 100 people living in  America. It makes people take advantage of them because they do not know or properly understand what is going on in their surroundings. This is shown when George is always telling Lennie about the rabbits and the land "that they are going to get" with Lennie not knowing the truth George uses this to make Lennie shut up when he needs him to.

Has been used in different cartoons.

The idea of a gigantic man with a mental disability wanting to pet rabbits but ends up crushing them has been used in many cartoons such as the "Looney Tunes."

 

Effects of Mental Retardation.

Mental retardation is categorized in different classes of IQ(intelligence quotient). Patients are diagnosed with Mental Retardation when their IQ is below the Borderline intellectual functioning Class of 0f 70. Many People with Mental Retardation experience the symptoms of delays in learning, difficulty remembering and difficulty with social skills. They usually have speech problems when talking.

 

 

in of mice and men Lennie comes under the social group of mentally retarded. however in the time when the film was set Lennie would have just been called stupid. Lennie is treated by people with in his community  as if he were a small child , he is spoken to very basically and is always being told what to do as he is always being controlled by others.

Evaluation Task 3: 'SOLO' Production and Distribution

Media : producers and distributers

 

After speaking to my Godfather Terry who is an English film producer himself. I found there are many more than one way of doing this and by working out the best way to do this is determined by the highest profit you are estimated to gain in the end. One way of doing this would be going through an English film company such as VERTIGO for producing and distribution however though this would work out substantially  cheaper and for your out payment , the English film industry is much smaller than the U.S so the English companies will have smaller budgets . this  could create restriction when filming or and editing making the movie less appealing to a wider audience. To go with a U.S producer and distributer such as, Warner bro’s, or a smaller company such as Magnolia would help benefit by giving the film a wider audience and most likely a lager budget.  Only down fall being it will be harder to find investors and if the film fails you may not gain a good payment. Payment can’t be done either though a percentage or a outright payment , to take a percentage could lead in to a great profit if the film dose well but if the film fails you will  most likely lose more then you have paid in to the film itself. By taking an outright payment you  are more likely to get more then you paid in to the movie but if the movie does well if you had taken the percentage you may have a least double that amount and you will continue to get the amount for the rest of time the film is being played or marketed suggesting you could make a lot more money.

 

Our movie “SOLO” being based on a real life American event suggests to me it may appeal to an American audience more than an English one, as links to them more personally, making it more engaging for them as they will feel a part of it . I also think to go with a big U.S film company Warner Bro’s would be good to make our film as it is a lot of editing and high technology quality , if we were to go with an English company such as Vertigo I don’t think they would give us the budget unless they joined up with a few other company’s such as the BBC , which would mean paying out more to other palaces when the movie is finish so they would not make as much profit. The U.S could make this film off of there one company and if it does well and makes the money back with profit as well as distributing it across the U.S . I think to take an aggraded payment on the film would be the best idea, as it is our first film we have no idea which way it is going to go and to take the percentage my work out badly. For such a high tech film I think you will need  a high budget to make it believable. I believe that our films best success is with a big U.S company , due to the fact that the film is an American story , it’s an action thriller , it has a larger audience and has a better chance of doing well internationally.

 

 

If they were to remake our film I would also allow them to take control of distribution as they have a lot of experience in way of distribution to benefit the film itself. Leaving everything in the hands of Warner bros. However it would be extremely hard to convince Warner bros to remake this movie , most likely they would remake  our film if it was a success. I think if we looked at a lower budget company they would be more likely to except the movie. Vertigo  is one of the UKs biggest film companies to use them to produce our film would work well and as it’s a smaller industry over here in the UK. Vertigo also has its own distribution company which has proved it marking skills though such as “Monster and Street dance”, getting then in to the cinemas and  selling them over to the USAs film festivals like SXSW and Sundance I think this is the best route to take for our film to do well and make the best profit for them, as they can sell the rights abroad. This would offset the costs for making the film, as they could sell the rights in advance as this can help fund the film. They would distribute my film by working in partnership with uk T.V comapanys such as BBC and ITV ,this would help to rase the budget for our film as they are a low budget british company. If a lager U.S comapny was interested in puchersing our film , Vertigo would most likely sell our movie on to make money for futer films and it would also alow our movie to be distrubted in the U.S.

Our thriller starts with the close up shot of the computer screen and progresses by slowly tracking out to an establishing shot of the setting, revealing the entire mise-en-scene of the boy's bedroom. This is a typical convention of a thriller as suspense is usually built from the very beginning by gradually introducing the audience to the action.

 

 

 

then cuts to this shoot which is where the first title that comes up. using after effect as to create something virtual helps appeal to an audience interested in sci-fi and techno thrillers. as well as creating the scene of something serous due to the text the colours and non-diegetic music.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

These next shots effectively communicate the technology theme of our thriller showing what is supposedly displayed on the boy's computer screen whilst he is cracking codes and discovering links to the FBI mainframe. This is typical of many techno thrillers as the film Pi shows many shots of charts and numbers and formulae, flickering in and out of the main action in the title sequence giving an insight to viewers of the technicality of the thriller.


 

 The low viewpoint mid shot of the main character displays his attention and concentration directed at cracking the code as well as threatening the audience as a result of the intimidating shot. This is similar to the film Pi as the main character creating a formula is shown to have frequent close up with in the film to allow the audience to relate to the character as well as maintaining a close narrative with the main character the audience should supposedly sympathise with.

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

This tracking shot introduces the audience to more of the thriller's mise-en-scene which is ultimately reinforcing the themes and messages of the thriller as the posters and pictures of aeroplanes relate to the boy's obsession with the aircraft. Additionally the tracking shot above shows the endless amount of gadgets and technology being used by the boy. This is typical of techno thrillers, in particular the thriller Pi as a result of scenes showing the main character situated amongst technology and computers. 

 

 

 

 

 

These final shots indicate the boy's success in cracking the FBI mainframe code and therefore display technological knowledge of the boy as a result of his autism. This is a skill he has acquired from the syndrome, being similar to the workings of the main character in the thriller Pi as he endeavours to work out the formula of Pi.
